All of the birds that lay large numbers of eggs are “precocial” which means, pretty much, Some of the eggs get broken or stolen by predators and many of the chicks get eaten by predators, which means that very few survive.
so that's why they lay hundreds of eggs so that few of them can survive and grow their generation.
