The memories which stay with you forever in you life are exceptional that is these memories either make you the happiest at a time when you remembered it or makes you the saddest also at the same time

These memories brings an innocent smile in your face at the same time and brings tears on your eyes if those memories are not at all the good ones

Reason :-

Because they are exceptional, they either have brought some changes in our life or in your thoughts or in your mind. You might have realises something which u until that incident happened considered something wrong! but after that incident happened you came to realise
