why do substance burn with or without flame

The burning involves rapid chemical oxidation of a combustible to produce heat. There is enough heat to excite atoms and we’ll assume that the combustibles have been decomposed down to atoms. The atom is, of course, composed of a nucleous with surrounding electrons. While the electrons are wave forms, it’s easier to think of these electrons spinning around the nucleons like so many planets. They are all in specific orbits precisely dictated by quantum mechanics. The outer, or valence electrons are where the action is and where thermal heating will affect the atom. The atom initially had its electrons in the ground state, the ordinary stable low energy configuration. The heat of combustion excites these valence electrons to a higher energy orbit (wave funtion).
