Substitution reactions like chlorinationor bromination of alkanes take placeonly in the presence of light. ... UV light breaks down the chlorine or bromine molecule into free radicals andreaction gets initiated. So this reactioncannot take place in lab.

Substitution reactions like chlorination or bromination of alkanes take place only in the presence of light. Because these are free radicals substitution reactions. And free radicals are generated in presence of sunlight or ultraviolet light. UV light breaks down the chlorine or bromine molecule into free radicals and reaction gets initiated. So this reaction cannot take place in lab.
