Why do the markings of hydrometer increase towards bottom

A hydrometerfloats on liquids for the same reason that a ship floats on water. If this liquid is one of lower density it is not as capable of supporting the weight of the hydrometer bulb so it sinks lower and more liquid is displaced until that amount equals the weight of the hydrometer
