why do the star's twinkle at night ? and why do they seem like just one extended source of light?

The twinkling of stars in our night sky is down to the Earth's atmosphere. As light from the stars travels towards Earth it can easily move in a straight line, but once it starts travelling through the Earth's atmosphere it gets bounced around in different directions by the particles in the air

Stars twinkle at night beacause:

1. Their is no sun, so no light refraction.

2. Due to continuous atmospheric refraction light path of stars is changed and hence appears to be twinkling.

3. This is due to phenomenon of refraction of light by atmosphere...
