Beacuse they have empty valence shell orbital that can accepts pair of electron from a lewis base. They must contain at least one pair of non bonding electron.. That can donated to a metal ions

Coz of large number of unpaired electrons in their atoms they have stronger Interatomic interaction and hence stronger bonding bw atoms resulting in higher enthalpies of atomisation.
