A bit hard to answer, as it depends a lot on what animal you are asking about.
- Beauty( it in the eye of the behokder, but many animals have a petability factor. Quite high in cats and wolf like creatures, and less in many insects and reptilians)
- Cuteness (also very subjective, but well, the red panda’s attack is ofteen seen as cute, not as dangerous: )
- Strength/agility/endurance (athletic animals)
- Abilities (bat’s echo location, snake’s infravision) abilities that we do not have, or not as welll developed)
- Curiousness (animals who ate as interested in you as you in them, squirrels, mongooses - or is that mangeese -)
- Alieness (animal who differ so much from us, it is just weird we inhabit the same planet)
- Alikeness (mostly apes, who do have a lot of human manners)
- Many animals have a combination of points.
For me, beauty, cuteness and curiousness are strong points fo me to like an animal. But I cannot deny that i can be fascinated by the brutal strength of an aligator.
