Transition elements have empty d orbitals.thus the electrons can jump into these empty orbitals and take part in the chemical reaction,iwing to their variable oxidation state...
in d block elements,highest oxidation state coincide with group number
.ex: group 5 - vanadium-V+5
group 6 Chromium Cr+6
group 7 Manganese. Mn+7
this trend is not observed in p block elements
