Why do two wires with current flowing in the same direction attract each other, and two wires with current flowing in opposite direction repel?

In the fig 1 the two have current flowing in the same direction. but according to thumb rule the direction of electric field of both the wires is opposite to each other that's why the wires will attract each other.
Fig 2 shows that the current flowing through the wires is in opposite direction but the direction of electric field is same that is why the wires will repel each other.
