They grow abundantly in eutrophic water bodies and lead to an imbalance in the ecosystem dynamics of the water body.

Explanation:

  • Water hyacinth is an invasive species which was once introduced by the Britishers in the Ponds and small lakes of their houses and nearby areas.
  • The water hyacinth covered the whole lake within a few months which disturbed the ecosystem of the lakes and running water bodies.
  • The reason for this disturbance is that the water hyacinth after covering the lake does not allow the sunlight to penetrate the depth of the water body and the halt the growth of the deep growing species. It also reduced the Biological demand of the lakes as it absorbs available oxygen.
  • It is difficult to get rid of them as the species grows by asexual mode of reproduction that is runners and stolons and can form new plants in short duration of time.
