The muscle responsible for the opening and closing of stomach is called sphincter muscle.
This process is necessary because during digestion, there is a secretion of an acid called Hydrochloric acid for the activation of pepsinogen.
Hydrochloric acid is a very strong acid, only stomach can protect itself from being affected by this acid as it's protected by a mucous lining.
But mucous lining is absent outside stomach, if the acid reaches outside stomach then it will cause burns in the oesophagus or intestine.
Hence the presence of sphincter muscles is necessary for the protection of organs during digestion from the acid.
