Why do we bend our knees when we reach the ground upon jumping from a height?

When jumping of roof, you loose all attachment with a surface. Therefore, when you hit the ground you will bend your knees to try and regain your balance. You are trying to increase your centre of gravity. It is a natural flight stance when you are in danger.
