You breathe in Oxygen and breath out CO2 (carbon dioxide) through your lungs. When you hold your breath, CO2 builds up within your blood. Increased CO2 is toxic to your body, so the body's natural response to get rid of it is to make you breath fast and deep to eliminate it. (more exhaling). Once your breathing has calmed to a normal state, you know your body has the right balance of CO2 within it.
