South India celebrate Diwali as the day that Lord Krishna (depicted above) defeated the demon Narakasura. In northern India, they celebrate the story of King Rama's return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana by lighting rows of clay lamps.

Diwali signifies the victory of good over evil and is celebrated as a Festival of Lights , to celebrate the arrival of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years. Rama is the seventh avatar of God Vishnu. During exile, he fought with the devl king of Lanka- Ravana, and defeated him. This is celebrated as on the behalf of Diwali
