Why do we clean magnesium ribbon with sand water? Write the equation of the reaction between magnesium ribbon in air

Mg + O2 (air) = MgO

magnisim reacts with air to produce magnisim oxide. we clean magnesium ribbon with sand paper to remove the surface layer of MgO so that Mg can burn if u don't then Mg will not burn
