Belgiums model of democracy is very complicated in order to solve its ethnic groups problem. For such a small country this type of power sharing is very complicated but the leaders in this country thought that if the power will be shared between the ethnic groups then the chances of having problems may decrease and they ammended their constitution in order to maintain pease in there country.
The Belgium model of sharing power is democratic setup in very complicated. It is so because many provisions has been made by their constituition. These provisions are not easy even for the people in Belgium to understand. These provision have helped avoiding civil strip between the two major communities and possible division upon linguistic lines.
The Belgian leaders' power-sharing arrangements were unique and inventive in comparison to those of any other country.
Why is it complex?
- Between 1970 and 1993, they revised their Constitution four times to recognize regional distinctions and cultural diversity.
- Because of the various divisional arrangements across the country, this form of power-sharing is quite hard for such a tiny country.
- The leaders believed that if power is divided between ethnic groups, the possibilities of having conflicts would be reduced.
How did it help?
- Because the government respected the culture, ideas, and philosophy of both populations, it helped to prevent confrontations and separation.
