At times due to a sudden feeling such as excitement, or fear the hair on our body automatically stand up which we call goosebumps or gooseflesh.

This is because at such times the erector muscle around the hair follicles contract and pull the hair upright. It is a kind of reflex because of the subconscious release of our body's stress hormone Adrenaline.

At times when we feel cold we too get goosebumps as a jesture of the body to create a layer of warmth since we are mammals. If you have a pet dog or cat you would have seen similar jestures of hair standing up after they get wet.
