Why do we hear a sound when we clap? Can we hear the sound in vacuum? Can the reason be that when we clap the air particles get close and suddenly get away and when we join our hands the particles fill back?

your consideration is partially right but vibration is the main cause of it

We can hear a sound when we clap becoz air molecules in the surrounding can transfer the sound waves but it is not done in vacuum.
