because curtains act like sound absorbers thereby reducing the affect of echo which tends to make the sound unclear.

The room with curtains has kinda barrier to outer sounds .. it acts like a barrier which doesn't let the superposition of sound waves from outdoors. Also it helps us to have sound for very little bit more time than usual supporting the vibrations and some time reflecting too
