Why do we humans give birth to one baby at a time?

This is because the human female reproductive system only releases one ovum with each menstrual cycle. This means that only one egg/ovum can be fertilized at a time. This is the main reason why human beings only give birth to one baby at a time.
In the case of twins, it is a rare occurrence where two ova are released at the same time(non-identical twins) or one fertilized ovum divides to form two zygotes(identical twins).
