why do we need industrialisation?
Answers
Laboratory equipment:
1. beaker (200ml-500ml)
2. Erlenmayer´s flask (100 ml)
3. heating place
4. graduated cylinder
5. buchner´s funnel with side-arm flask connected to a vacuum pump
Compounds used:
1. sacharose
2. nitric acid (65%)
3. water
The principle of making oxalic acid is to oxidize sacharose by concentrated nitric acid. First I weighed 10 grams of cane sugar. Then I measured out 50 ml of nitric acid and mixed it with sugar. I´ve put the mixture into a boiling water bath and after a while, fumes of nitrogen dioxide started to come out of erlenmyer flask boisterously. The reaction is over when there´s no more nitrogen gas evolving. Now we have solution of oxalic acid. We can simply obtain the solid form by evaporating a fraction of the solvent´s volume and cooling down the residue. The product crystallizes immediately. I recommend to use vacuum filtration to dry up your product perfectly.
