Why do we need modulation of radio waves?

Audio waves are what need to be modulated to allow transmission over large distances. Radio waves are used to perform the actual modulation., they are known as the carrier signal. Audio waves are too low in frequency such that there would be too much interference, the world would be in utter chaos.
