why do we need symbols on a map??

Apart from showing just contour lines, topographic maps also use a lot of map symbols to represent its features. Features are represented by using point, line, and area symbols. Individual features, such as houses, are shown as point symbols like a small dot or square.

1) even if you dont know the language of an area and therefore cannot ask someone for direction we can collect information from maps with the help of these symbols

2) We draw symbols on the map because we cannot draw the actual shape and size of the features of the earth.

3) We use symbols so we don't get confused and understand the map.
