Why do we often use the term "Indian peninsula"

A piece of land surrounded by water from three sides is called a peninsula. As India is surrounded by water from three sides it is also referred to as the Indian peninsula. These three water bodies are:
South- Indian ocean, West- Arabian sea and East- Bay of Bengal.
