First of all, that's not a question related to psychology.
The temple bells are made of extremely sonorous materials. The bells hadn't been a part of the temples from the beginning.
The actual idea of bells was brought by the Buddhists. Not bells, but sonorous materials. They believed that a continuous sound production by a sonorous material improves meditation capabilities and concentration. Usually during meditation a person falls asleep due to being in an extreme ease. The sound vibrations also help to keep the meditator awake and alert during the process.
The same idea was adopted by the temple authorities and became necessary till date.
