We say that all medicines are drugs but not all drugs are medicines because:

  • Drugs used for medical purposes are known as medicines/medications.
  • In theory, all chemicals have medical potential, but most drugs are altered in some way to improve intended effects and/or reduce unfavourable side effects.
  • This means that there will often be better options than some therapies, and that some pharmaceuticals will only be useful in a small subset of situations, necessitating no general understanding of their use.
