MIRAGE IS A OPTICAL ILLUSION CAUSED BY ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION. AND IT APPEARS LIKE WATER HAS COVERED ON THE ROAD AT A DISTANT PLACE ,BUT ITS APPEARS THAT THERE IS NO WATER,THIS HAPPENS DUE TO VARIABLE REFRACTIVE INDEX AND TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION . SO THIS IS WHY IT APPEARS AS FLOWING WATER. I HOPE THIS HELPED U ....

The mirage is an optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions, especially the appearance of a sheet of water in a desert or on a hot road caused by the refraction of light from the sky by heated air.

Mirages happen when the ground is very hot and the air is cool. The hot ground warms a layer of air just above the ground. When the light moves through the cold air and into the layer of hot air it is refracted (bent). A layer of very warm air near the ground refracts the light from the sky nearly into a U-shaped bend.
This phenomenon is known as Total Internal Reflection.
