There are two sides of moon one dark and one reflect. The light of sun falling on the moon varies as it revolves around the earth. When the sunlight falls on dark side, we cannot see the moon, when it falls on the reflect side, we can see the moon. When sunlight falls on both the sides then, we see half moon and so on....
