Because, the image formed in a convex mirror is smaller than the object. Due to this, more area is reflected in the same size of convex mirror than in a plane mirror of the same size.
This enables the driver to observe more of the traffic without increasing the size of the mirror.

Convex mirrors are the curved mirrors which do not give a flat view but gives a compressed view
The use of convex mirror as rear view mirror in vehicles is very advantageous.
It helps to give a clear image of the vehicles.
It helps to provide a larger view than a normal plane mirror.
The image formed on the mirror appears to be small this is very helpful.
It helps to view more number of vehicles and many others. They can be easily fit and visible.
Though it creates an illusion that objects are farther away it helps to view them clearly.
To avoid such illusion mostly it is written "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear " on the mirrors.
