Coke is used as fuel, as well as an oxidising agent in blast furnaces for smelting iron ore. It is this property of oxidisation (reducing agent) that makes it suitable for smelting iron ore. Carbon monoxide produced during combustion reduces the iron oxide to produce iron.

Coke is made by heating coal in an ‘air-less’ environment. It is high in carbon content and has less of impurities, unlike coal.
