Mercury is used in thermometers because of the given reasons below :
1. Mercury is the only element which has a large value of coeffcient of expansion.
2. When it is used in the thermometer, a very little change in the temperature can be found out.
3. It has the capability to measure temperatures that are high.
4. It does not get sticked to the surface of the thermometer which is made of glass.
Water cannot be used in thermometers because -
1. Water cannot measure the temperature which is below 0 celsius and which is more than 100 celsius.
2. We will not be able to identify water if used in the thermometers because the former one is transparent.
