Manjuli is the largest inhabited Riverine Island in the world and lies in the Brahmaputra river . The rivers slipt into a number of channel in their lower course due to deposition of silt. These channel are called Distributaries .

The Himalayan uplift out of the Tethys sea and subsidence of the northern flank of the peninsular plateau resulted in the formation of large basin . In course of time , this deposition gradually got filled with the deposition of sediments from the rivers flowing from the mountains in Northern plain and led to the formation of the fertile northern plain.
