why do well trained athletes hold their breath until the race is finifshed

they do it for small races only...like 100 metres, 200 metres to overcome fatigue and concentrate all the blood cells for running not respiration.

They hold their breath to prevent anaerobic respirarion from taking place that causes pain and fatigueness of muscles.

If such a thing occurs , their speed will be reduced and would affect their performance, 

Therefore they hold their breath till last to use it for providing energy to keep the speed till last and win..
