Answer:

An all embracing idea. The sense and perception of space. Distances between fortified towns measured in days, covered by forests, open prairies, pristine waters, though for the traveler all populated by elves, fairies, demons, monsters and otherworldly creatures. That of time, scanned merely by the strokes of churches’ bells, echoing in silent alleys and over hilly farms. One bar's enlongated shadow on a marbled clock, inherited from forgotten centuries past.

A ray of sunlight on a scribe's wooden desk, warming the ornated character born by the drawing attempt at preserving antiquity's lost knowledge. An ever present God, one that knows everything and expects deference and sacrifice, subjugation, inspiring art and wars alike. And evidence of proof debated by scholars against faith, accommodated in the latter's dogmas. The hesitating hands of the man resurfacing Aristotle from oblivion, reading in fear and awe his 'eternity of the world' thesis, plunging the mind into chaos.

Gleaming armies resounding on the land, blooded by clanking swords, and the cross, honour, dust and destruction. The end of the world and the plague, the punishment of sins, and the conquest of holy places, against enemies whose alien customs call for inhumane tales. Siege-scarred cold castles' walls, the smell of manure, and the lichens on shores' rocky precipices, crashed by waves of seas leading to other infinite ones. Storytellers entertaining masses, recounts of knights and ladies' lives of long gone kingdoms, chivalry ideals feeding their imaginary world culminating in one of a salvation for all to come.

That’s what I like of it. The feeling, incomplete awareness of a time I haven't lived, of its slow progress toward us, seeding the world I know, defining it from afar, as for the emotions I experience contemplating and thinking about it.

Answer:

In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or Medieval Period lasted from the 5th to the late 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The Middle Ages is the middle period of the three traditional divisions of Western history: classical antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern period. The medieval period is itself subdivided into the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages.
