Internetworking is the practice of connecting a computer network with other networks through the use of gateways that provide a common method of routing information packetsbetween the networks. The resulting system of interconnected networks are called an internetwork, or simply an internet. Internetworking is a combination of the words inter("between") and networking; not internet-working or international-network.

In telecommunications, a repeater is an electronic device that receives a signaland retransmits it. Repeaters are used to extend transmissions so that the signal can cover longer distances or be received on the other side of an obstruction.

Some types of repeaters broadcast an identical signal, but alter its method of transmission, for example, on another frequency or baud rate.
