It's an opinion that's subtly reinforced every single day in hundreds of ways. I use a brand of baby wipes on my children which says it's been "tested by mothers". Once you're aware of that phrase you see it a lot. It means it's a product designed for babies, toddlers or children which has been rigorously tested by the final user... who is female. I've been a parent for almost three years now and a parent of two kids for over 12 months. I have changed thousands of nappies in my time but every time I use a baby wipe it tells me that I'm encroaching on the mother's territory.
Ever wandered around the babies section of the supermarket or even in a specialised baby shop (like Mothercare for example) and seen the product packaging and advertising? How many Dad's have you seen on boxes or bags? It's almost always a smiling mum with her happy child and very rarely a dad. Sometimes you'll see an entire family but generally it's the woman with the child with the male totally absent.
As parents of very young children we have to jump online all the time to look up various ailments or conditions (Oh my god! His lips are slightly pinkish. Google pink lips!) and we're always directed to hundreds of babycare or toddler care sites. Most of them are blatant in only ever talking about what "Mother" can do to care for their child and many of them assume the father is completely absent.
The media and advertising drum home the message in hundreds of ways every day- parenting is a mother's job.
