This happens due to dispersion of light. After rainfall, some droplets of water remains suspended in the air. When the sunlight passes through these droplets , they split into 7 colours ( violet, indigo, blue, green , yellow, orange and red).

A prism scatters the white light into seven different colours and this process is called dispersion. This phenomenon takes place to produce a rainbow after the rain. The minuscule water droplets after rain act as natural prisms which scatters the light of the sun and forms a rainbow. It is a combination of seven colours, starting from violet, indigo, blue, green, orange, and red are the colours of the rainbow. The prisms scatter the colours of a rainbow in this order which is according to the wavelength of a colour.
