Answer:

Henry Louis Vivian Derozio is the first Indian to write poetry in English. He is also one of the first Indian educators to disseminate western learning and science among the young men of Bengal. He has a mixed Portuguese descent, he is generally considered as an Anglo- Indian. Derozio loved India so much and his love for the nation is reflected in his poems. During his lifetime, he was known as the first national poet of India. Even though he died prematurely at the age of twenty-three, he produced poetry in a huge variety of forms ranging from lyrics to songs, elegies, sonnets and ballads. Unlike the recent years when Indians have won due recognition for their writings in English, the time when Derozio wrote poetry in English things was far from propitious. The English reader could not imagine a native or an Anglo-Indian native with English as his mother tongue. He, being the son of an Indian father and an English mother, Derozio was influenced by the English Romantic poets. He began publishing patriotic verses when he was 17, which brought him to the attention of the intellectual elite of Calcutta. In 1826 he was appointed instructor at Hindu College, where his reportedly brilliant teaching influenced his students and won him their loyalty. In 1828 his students organized the Academic Association, a debating society that drew both Britons and Indians to discussions of religion and philosophy. In the spirit of English rationalism, Derozio criticized the social practices and religious beliefs of orthodox Hinduism. Accused of irreverence by his students’ orthodox Hindu parents, he was forced to resign by the directors of Hindu College in 1831. Most of his poetry reflected Indian native stories reflected in Victorian style. His work “The Fakir of Jungheera” has a Byronic touch. It describes “Nuleeni’, a Brahmin widow and her various ups and downs due to her star-crossed life.  “My Native Land”, Derozio presents a very beautiful picture of both the past and the pre H.L.V. Derozio is also a great poet of nationalistic zeal. sent of India. He imagines India as an eagle whose feathers are chained and so the kingly eagle is grovelling in the dust. His sonnet, “Poetry” deals with his concept of poetic creation. Being the first Indian writer to write poetry in English, it is so just to call him the ‘father of English poetry in India.’
