There was a traditional belief in the then Indian brahmins that if they crossed the sea to travel overseas,then they will lose their religion as well as caste.It was a taboo for them to travel overseas.
So,when in 1824,the sepoys were asked to Burma by sea route,they all strictly refused and were eventually punished by the British.
Note:-It was one of the prime causes of the First war of Independence or the War of 1857.
