Some artist rejected the art of Ravi Varma as imitative and westerniesd and declared that such a style was unsuitable for depicting the nations ancient myths and legends. They felt that a genius Indian style of painting had to draw inspiration from non-Western art tradition, and try to capture the essence of the East. Abanindranath Tagore was one of the first artist who wanted to develop a national style of art.

✔Towards the end of 19th century, many painters wanted to establish a stronger connection between art and nationalism. In order to achieve this, they tried to develop a style that could be considered both modern and Indian. The initial attempts to create a national style of Art on be seen in the works produced by Raja Ravi Varma.

✔Nationalist artist felt that a genuine Indian style of painting had to draw inspiration from non - Western art and traditions and try to capture the spiritual essence of the east.
