The high acid content of the stomach inhibits the enzyme activity, so carbohydrate digestion is suspended in the stomach

Reason why Carbohydrates are not digested in stomach:

  • Carbohydrate is the combination of the carbon(C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). The digestion of the carbohydrate starts in the mouth with help of chewing and amylase enzyme in the saliva.
  • The remaining process will happen in small intestine.  As because there are no amylase enzyme can work properly in the stomach due to acidic condition that why the carbohydrate digestion do not take place in the stomach.
