The marshal decided to help Easton as he was considerate. he did not want Easton to embarrass himself in front of an old friend who was looking at him very excitedly.

In my opinion, Easton did not deserve this as he had made a crime and was going to Leavenworth for the same.

The marshal was a keen and shrewd man. He was observant and could understand the situation. He saw miss Fairchilds eyes grow wide in shock upon seeing the handcuffs and so he told her that it was he who was the criminal and easton the marshal. He did this in order to gain more information abt easton for he understood that the two were old aquaintences and this is evident from the fact that he asked Fairchild to ask easton to put in a word for him at pen, indirectly telling easton that if he went along then he would make things easier for him.
