Mahavira, the 24th and the last tirthankara came to be known as Jina (conqueror of self). Jina was used for him, because he was the conqueror of his inner enemies--greed, desire, anger, passion, ego etc.

Mahavira left his home and royal life in order to conquer his inner enemies and after long struggle and mediation he attained perfect perception, knowledge, power, and spirituality.
