At first the narrator did not want to go to work because he spend six months of time at home joyously and he did not want to leave behind his newly-wed wife. But later he decided to go because he had debts. He had no more leave. And his marriage increased his responsibilities.

Ans: The author was in debt. He might have got into debt by the following reasons:

(1) He might have got into debt with the marriage expenses. (2) He might have got into debt as he had no salary when he was on leave. (3) He might have paid off his father’s debts.

Ans: The author thought the whole world would laugh at him if he carried his trunk. His fear was only imaginary. No one would laugh at him if he carried his own luggage as he was a young man and it was an easy thing for him to carry it. In fact all the people would praise him for his modesty for not making his father carry the luggage.

Ans: The phrase ‘Opposite directions’ suggest that the ways of the author and his father which are quite different. The opposite directions are symbolic of their life-styles also.

At another place, the narrator remembers how father had provided for his education. The way he realized his parents’ dreams, etc.
