The reason water is so important is because of the fact that water is the essence of life. Water provides crops as well as a place to bath. Lets not forget that water can also be used to of course travel. So back then almost every town or city was settled nect to water so they could send boats. This would be great for trading purposes or if it was just for diplomacy or war

Water is an essential source of life . It is used in the various activities like cooking,washing etc .The valleys in the ancient civilizations near rivers played an important role in the lives of people living near them. The river valleys , because of being highly fertile, were very suitable for agricultural purposes. Settling down near these water bodies helped in expansion of trade and easy transport. That's why these river valleys very highly populated as well. This is how water has played and still plays an important role in where people will settle down.
