The increased height of Sardar Sarovar dam caused flooding of areas surrounding the reservoir. This affected the people of those areas, besides having a negative impact on the flora and fauna. People were displaced and many of them lost their livelihood from professions, which they had inherited over generations.

On the other hand, the government’s view was that it would provide water for irrigation to 18,000 square kilometres of drought prone land in Kutch and Saurashtra. The hydro-electric project would also provide 1450 MW of electricity to the area.

The Sardar Sarovar dam is built on River Narmada, near Navagam in Gujarat.

Because more than 40000 families had to leave their land and homes as it will get submerged in the water of the land and to stop the building of dam they started jal satyagrah and massive misinformation was also launched against the dam that led to many confusions among people.
