Vigyan Vidushi (VV) is a three-week summer programme for women students at the end of their M.Sc. first-year in physics, which will provide them an exposure to advanced physics topics and research opportunities, and encourage them to take up research in physics as a career option. The students in this program will also get an opportunity to be taught, inspired, and mentored by successful women scientist role models.

Eligiblity: The VV programme will be directed towards students who have just completed the first year of their M.Sc. degree, or the fourth year of their Integrated B.Sc. - M.Sc. degree. (Those already enrolled in an Integrated M.Sc- Ph.D. programme will not be eligible.)

Number of participants: Up to about 40 women students will be selected from nationwide applications.

Logistics and support: The programme will be a residential one, lectures as well as accommodation will be at the Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education in Mumbai. All participants will be reimbursed travel expenses (AC 3-tier train or road travel per norms). Accommodation and meals will be provided for the duration of the program.

Structure of the programme: The basic structure of the VV programme will be like a summer school. There will be normally six courses, each of which will run for a week. In every week, two courses will run in parallel. A course will typically consist of lectures in the morning, and approximately equal time devoted to tutorials and/or experimental/computational sessions in the afternoon. Students may be divided into smaller groups during the tutorials. There will be interaction sessions in the evening.

While some of the courses will focus on strengthening basic understanding of physics essentials, most of the courses will be on topics that may not be normally covered in M.Sc. classes in a University. Even when the topics may be common, the elements of research or unique perspectives of active researchers will be essential parts of the courses. The courses are expected to lead to a review of current research in the area towards the end. Some of the topics envisaged are:

Classical / Quantum Mechanics,

Statistical Mechanics / Mathematical Methods,

Astronomy / Astrophysics / Cosmology,

Nuclear / Particle physics,

Condensed Matter Physics,

Experimental techniques.

This is not an exhaustive list, the Academic Committee will decide on the course contents every year. The courses may have, in addition to lectures, components of experiments as well as computation.

In addition to the regular courses, the VV programme will have the following unique points:

Advanced experiments will be set up, including some of the experiments offered in the TIFR Graduate School as well as some developed for the Physics Olympiads

Visits to TIFR for visiting laboratories as well as performing some experiments

Special lectures by women scientists, as well as on women scientists that would serve as role models

Ample opportunities for interacting with subject experts, including many women scientists

Special mentoring dealing with gender-related issues

Exposure to Physics Education Research that is carried out at HBCSE
