The initial case is heard in a trial court and a verdict is announced. If either party is not satisfied with the verdict, they can file an appeal with a higher court such as the courts of appeal or the supreme court(after going through the other courts). The appeal is to have the high courts to review the verdict and the case, mostly to seek a better verdict or dismissal of the case. This is why people move their cases from lower courts to higher courts.
