Why does a computer need two kinds

We have two different memories in computers to serve two entirely different purposes, which the other can't fulfil. On one hand, we have the Random Access Memory(RAM), which is very fast, but can't remember anything beyond its power supply. It's used for temporarily storing data and running applications.
